Donald P Wisehart, ASA, CPA/ABV, MST

Don Wisehart is a Kent State graduate and Bryant College post-graduate. He has advised individuals and industry (health care, IT, chemical, personal services, retail, not-for-profits) since he graduated from Kent State in 1968. He has worked with several of his clients for more than 30 years, and has taught at Johnson and Wales University, Roger Williams University and the University of Rhode Island. and for various professional organizations since 1995. While Don Wisehart is one of the foremost business valuation experts in New England, he maintains his focus on quality service for all clients. A complete bio is available upon request.

Education

College Degrees: Donald Wisehart received his Bachelors of Arts in Accounting from Kent State University, Kent Ohio in March 1968, three months ahead of his four year schedule. He received his Masters of Taxation from Bryant College, Smithfield, Rhode Island in June 1984.

Professional Continuing Education: Donald has averaged more than 120 hours of continuing education (CPE) over the past 10 years covering major business valuation, tax and financial accounting issues.

Valuation Experience

Companies that Mr Wisehart has valued, both public and private, have come from a variety of industries with sales ranging from as little as $500 thousand to as much as $365 million and having market values over $1 billion. These companies have come from the manufacturing, non-manufacturing, service, and retail sectors. A number of his valuation clients have come from high tech industries such as software and .com companies. He has valued stock option and a variety of intangible assets as well as business entities both on controlling and non-controlling bases. For companies undergoing IPO’s, Mr Wisehart has guided companies through the valuation process and up to the formal SEC registration. He has provided litigation support both as an expert witness and as an analyst for valuations in various legal proceedings including divorce, shareholder disputes and economic loss cases.

Teaching

Since 1996, he has lectured for both the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts on various business valuation topics. He has spoken on the national level on such topics as “Capitalization and Discount Rates” and “Discounts and Premiums”. In fact, the course that he developed on discounts and premiums was designated by NACVA as a core course for their business valuation certification program. “Discounts and Premiums” has also been sold as a self-study course. He also developed and taught a course entitled “Using the Guideline Public Company Method”. This course was expanded to encompass all aspects of the market approach and became a required course in NACVA’s certification program beginning May 2000. He has served as the Chairman of the Education Board for NACVA and was the first president of the Rhode Island Business Appraisal Group In that same year, Mr. Wisehart, received the “Outstanding Member Award” from the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts (NACVA). In 1999, his firm became affiliated with the Financial Consulting Group L.C, a nationally recognized group of business valuation experts totaling some 70 firms across the country. In 2000, Mr. Wisehart became one of six voting members of this organization. The diverse specialties of FCG’s membership provide a rich resource for its members to draw upon. At the beginning of 2002, Mr. Wisehart successfully completed all requirements by the American Society of Appraisers to become an Accredited Senior Appraiser (ASA). 

Publication

Mr Wisehart along with 23 other valuation experts from around the country was selected to co-author a major treatise on aspects of business valuations. When completed, this book is expected to be the reference book in the field. The book, to be published by Wiley & Sons, is in its final stages and should be available March 2003. Financial Valuation, edited by James R Hitchner, offers the tools and guidance to apply valuation techniques, including numerous cases and hundreds of quick reference “ValTips” highlighting important issues.
